IU1 is a regional educational service agency serving the twenty-five school districts and five vocational technical schools in Fayette, Greene, and Washington counties. For more than a decade, IU1 has replicated successful STEM programs and built an infrastructure capable of supporting future initiatives. IU1's success has come from unique partnerships with the Benedum Foundation, Washington & Jefferson College, the business community, and state/federal grants. As IU1 continues to roll-out best practice K-12 STEM programs, we are committed to building industry partnerships that will:
  • Introduce students/teachers to cutting edge technology and equipment
  • Overcome stereotypes about who participates and achieves in STEM fields
  • Connect teachers/students with real-life workforce problems

STEM Education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real world lessons where students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy.
